IndianOil’s R & D Centre gets special recognition for Bioremediation
IndianOil’s R & D Centre has won the ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) HSE special recognition award jointly with TERI, Ruwais refinery of ADNOC and M/s Hamed Establishment GTC, UAE for its Oilivorous technolgy for treatment of oily sludge through Bioremediation. There were 59 entries for this prestigious award.
This recognition will certainly pave the way for IndianOil to enter into business with Gulf petroleum companies in the area of oily waste management through Bioremediation.
A trial was conducted by IndianOil’s R & D Centre and TERI with indigenous bacteria collected from Ruwais Industrial Waste Management facility and after series of experiments; four bacterial strains were isolated, selected and used for the treatment of 200 tonnes of drill cuttings in high density polyethylene lined pit. After 135 days of initiation of bioremediation the result showed that the total petroleum hydrocarbon in drill cuttings was reduced considerably from 17.26% to 0.98% meeting ADNOC HSE guidelines.
ADNOC was looking for an alternate cost effective and environment friendly technology. Bioremediation was selected as the most suitable alternative. The process uses naturally occurring microorganisms to transform harmful substances to non-toxic compounds. ADNOC has strongly recommended this technology for the treatment of the drill cuttings, oily sludge and oil-contaminated soil to their Group of Companies.
Bioremediation trial was done successfully for the first time in UAE, which proved that Bioremediation is a more efficient technique, which can be replaced with expensive waste management methodologies practiced currently by the oil industries. The bioremediation process was verified and certified in 2006 by the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi.
