Honorable President Inaugurates IndianOil’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations

June 30, 2009: The Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, was resplendent with pride & celebratory mood. The precincts of the sought-after internationally prominent venue was overflowing with special guests who had flown from abroad, ambassadors, CEOs of top industries, the top bureaucrats of the nation, politicians, ministers, ex-ministers, media barons, luminaries from the capital, leading lights from the oil & gas sector, IndianOil’s reseller network, stakeholders, cheered and applauded along with the jubilant IndianOil current and past team members led by Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman & its Board of Directors, as the inaugural lamp was lit by the Chief Guest of the evening, Honorable President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, to mark its ‘50 Golden Years In The Service Of The Nation’ against the backdrop of the powerful rendition of Gayatri Mantra.

Honorable President said, “It gives me great pleasure to participate in the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Indian Oil Corporation. Fifty years of this organisation are symbolic of India’s efforts to build its own energy industry with a view to achieving self-sufficiency and thereby, meet the strategic requirements of energy security. When Indian Oil Corporation came into existence in 1959, the country’s domestic oil sector was almost non-existent. We can be proud that today India has home-grown energy companies in exploration, production and distribution of oil & gas, which are world class.” Honorable President added that IndianOil with its team of scientists, engineers and managers can be a significant player in the global expansion of the nation’s oil and gas sector.

Considering that IndianOil is the largest public enterprise of the country with maximum percent of the share capital of the Corporation being held by the President of India, her gracious presence was befitting and a great honour & encouragement for the IndianOil family in their moment of pride.

IndianOil ensconced in the annals of philately

IndianOil was also firmly ensconced in the annals of philately as the Honorable President released a commemorative golden jubilee stamp with the First Day Cover. IndianOil’s stature, presence and reach could not have had a better honour than being captured by the Department of Posts in the beautifully designed commemorative stamp that depicts its refining and marketing facets. The albums were presented to each of the dignitaries on the dais.

Mr. A. Raja, Honorable Minister of Communications & IT, in his congratulatory speech, further complimented, “IndianOil is a symbol of the commanding heights envisaged for the public sector. Apart from its all-pervading presence in India, it has imprinted its footprints abroad and set many benchmarks for other corporates. In this sense, IndianOil inspires the innate pride of every Indian as a truly national company with international credentials.” He shared, “It is a momentous day for IndianOil and India. The commemorative postage stamp acknowledges the services of IndianOil to the nation and its people. The petrol & diesel station is the public face of IndianOil, which is very familiar to us. But behind it, in the background, is a complex chain of operations and business processes that begin with crude oil processing at the refineries, its transportation by pipelines, rail and roadways to far flung and remote areas for usage of general public. The stamp has been designed keeping this in mind.”

'Jaye He! Jaye He!' resonating in the evocative words of the national anthem that set off the inauguration, flashed back the memories of many who recalled the fervent words of India’s First Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru who had espoused that economic self-reliance is crucial for a newly independent nation. He had said that in a landscape dominated by poverty and illiteracy, equitable development could take place only when enterprises assumed social responsibility. That’s why he referred to Government-owned enterprises as the ‘temples of modern India’. It was this vision that led to the birth of Indian Oil Company Ltd., on the 30th day of June, in the year 1959.

The luminaries who joined the celebrations were Mr. Murli Deora, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. A. Raja, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communication & IT and Mr. R. S. Pandey, Secretary, MoP&NG. Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs and Dr. Omkar Goswami, Chairman, CERG Advisory, delivered Special Addresses.

Setting the tone of the celebrations, Mr. Behuria, Chairman, IndianOil, while welcoming the august audience said, “IndianOil was not built in a day. Each day of these past 50 years has seen a great amount of planning and hard work from a committed team. Today, my thoughts go back to our founding fathers and former colleagues whose far-sightedness and arduous labour steered the Company to what it is today.” Mr. Behuria, while warmly welcoming the distinguished guests added, “We would like to express the most sincere thanks of the IndianOil team to our former colleagues for their far-sighted vision and for their dedication to service.”

Mr. Murli Deora, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, while extending his heartiest greetings to each and every IOCian from across the nation said that ambitious growth targets have been set before us and I am confident that IndianOil and other oil companies, will play their role in realising the cherished goals set for our nation.

To highlight the magnificent successes and milestones of IndianOil, since its inception in 1959 to being the country’s largest commercial enterprise was unfolded through a special audio-visual film titled, ‘Energy of India’. The film chronicled IndianOil’s remarkable growth story, the nascent beginning, its noteworthy growth…its ever expanding infrastructure meeting aspirations of millions of customers…its rise to a global entity…and its big dream for the next 50 years.

“In the fifty years of its existence, IndianOil has grown to be a role model for other corporates, displaying high standards of professionalism while at the same time meeting its social objectives effectively. It is the vision and dynamism of the top leadership and the passion, zeal and hard work of the employees down the line that made it possible for IndianOil to emerge as a shining star of the Indian Public Sector,” was the appreciation received from Mr. Jitin Prasad, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Mr. Pandey while congratulating everyone in IndianOil on the Golden Jubilee Celebration said, “Today there is hardly any household, rural or urban, rich or poor that does not use kerosene or other petroleum products and in all these services, IndianOil’s place is the largest and most extensive. IndianOil is the only OMC to reach the remotest and the most difficult of places like Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshwadeep Islands and even places like Leh & Kargil where IndianOil has petrol pumps.” Mr. Pandey added that its presence with a network from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Kutch to Kohima, that has given it a stature of truly being pan-Indian.

At the end of the first session of the celebrations, Mr. V. C. Agrawal, Director, Human Resources, thanked the Honorable President, for her gracious presence that enriched and enhanced the historic occasion for the IndianOil Family. Mr. Agrawal said, “We acknowledge that IndianOil’s success story also belongs to our business partners, channel partners and major customers. We would like to express our gratitude to our millions of customers who believe in us, to our stakeholders who support us, to our leaders who encourage us, to our people who toil to bring to life all our corporate dreams and aspirations.”

And the euphoria continued………………

From the solemnity of the inaugural event, the evening transformed into a high note enveloped with emotions …of one rhythm…35,000 heartbeats as the stage was set alive with the electrifying introduction of IndianOil’s first corporate song by none other than Dr. Palash Sen of India’s most sought after music group—EUPHORIA. The corporate song …

“Mera karm, Mera imaan
Meri aan, Meri shaan, Meri jaan
Aadhar desh ki pragati ka
Duniya me itna samman hain
Aage bhadege, ucche udenge
Hum sabka yahi abhiyaan
IndianOil, IndianOil , Meri pehchhan hain…
caught the hearts of hundreds and hundreds of IndianOil members who joined in bringing a crescendo of emotions in the Plenary Hall resounding with the words, IndianOil, Mera abhimaan hain… IndianOil, meri pehchhan hain…

The golden jubilee milestone spurred the IndianOil team to put together their collective aspirations and emotions in some evocative lyrics into the first Corporate Song of IndianOil, written by Harish Arora and composed by Dr. Palash Sen and his group, Euphoria. Each word of this song rides on the firm resolve of the IndianOil team to play a proactive part in the nation’s growth and to fulfill IndianOil’s roles with complete commitment and responsibility. It is a song that will foster and evoke deeper fraternity and commonality of purpose for each member of the IndianOil team.

Mr. R. S. Pandey, Secretary, Petroleum, launched the CD of IndianOil’s first corporate song.

The first and oldest channel partners felicitated

It was a befitting time to felicitate IndianOil’s oldest as well as the first business partners (reseller network) who had placed their confidence in IndianOil in its formative years, and are still going strong and supportive of IndianOil’s larger vision. Mr. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, presented a citation and a silver plaque to the Oldest Retail Outlet (Rasiklal Ashok Kumar and Company, Kutch), Oldest Kerosene Agency (Star Enterprises, Vijaywada), Oldest LPG Distributor (SK Trading Company, Patna) and Oldest Distributor under Freedom Fighter Category (Mahakal Indane Services, MP). IndianOil proudly acknowledged its long-standing partnerships with them.

Erudite reflections of eminent thinkers

The august audience had a very special treat in the erudite presence of Dr. Shashi Tharoor, who held the audience spellbound with his incisive thoughts on ‘Incomplete Transformation of India’. Author, peace-keeper, refugee worker, human rights activist, Member of Indian Parliament and now Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr. Shashi Tharoor straddles several worlds of experience. Listening to him was a real treat! Eleven books and innumerable newspaper columns penned by him have made him one of India’s best-known voices worldwide.

Dr. Tharoor held forth his views on the many facets of India. Dr. Tharoor spoke on the vision of a transformed India and IndianOil being very much a part of this transformation.” He added that the country has changed for the better…the change is being well epitomised in the story of Indian Oil Corporation, a public sector giant, which is listed on the stock exchange and is an illustrious member of the Fortune 500.

The evening also witnessed an engrossing address by Dr. Omkar Goswami, Chairman, CERG Advisory, on the ‘Role of Corporates in Unlocking India’s True Potential’. Dr. Omkar Goswami is the Founder and Chairman of CERG (Corporate and Economic Research Group) Advisory Private Limited. A professional economist, Dr. Goswami reflected on the threads of India, a nation full of treasures, people, natural resources and landscapes. There are so many more capabilities and competencies that are lying dormant. Dr. Goswami said that strong corporations have a role to play in unlocking India’s true potential. He warmly wished that IndianOil grow in strength along with India and have greater freedom to operate.

The informative talks enthralled and enriched the horizon of the distinguished audience.

Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas unveils IndianOil Vision statement

The evening reached its pinnacle with Mr. Murli Deora unveiling the new Vision statement of IndianOil. The Vision, designed to capture the collective aspiration of IndianOilPeople, is the result of an exhaustive three-tier process that was initiated in October 2007. Mr. Deora congratulated the IndianOilFamily for achieving this landmark milestone.

Mr. V. C. Agrawal, Director (Human Resources), IndianOil shared in his introduction that IndianOil coined its first Vision statement in 1999 that helped it to explore new business vistas and emerge as a global entity. A decade later, at the glorious Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Corporation has now unveiled an all new Vision for itself, which will be its guiding principle in years to come.

Mr. Agrawal also shared that the need for re-defining the Vision was felt because of two major reasons – first, IndianOil had already achieved most of the goals stated in the last Vision statement and hence, needed to chart new targets to invigorate itself. Secondly, a lot of developments in the macro-business environment took place during the last decade that needed to be included in IndianOil’s business strategies.

The journey for re-visiting the Vision was designed to capture the collective aspiration of IndianOilPeople and also the other stake-holders so that it becomes a ‘Shared Vision’ rather than ‘Vision Shared’. Thus, the new Vision is not merely a statement, but it is actually a matrix with identified elements of Vision like People, Innovation, Environment, Technology, Customers and Ethics. It is the consolidation of its past 50 years of achievement and experience, accommodating Corporation’s aspirations, dreams, hopes and ambitions for the future.

The finale

Taking the jubilant & exultant mood of the IndianOil team further Mr. Behuria, Chairman as a fitting finale said, “All success begins in the mind. What a mind can conceive, it can achieve. Fifty years ago, IndianOilPeople embarked on a golden journey, fuelled by nothing but the spirit to serve and a passion to excel. This is what made the team succeed in realising their dreams and aspirations.

Mr. Behuria concluded with the inspiring and soul-stirring words of one of the world’s greatest leaders, Mr. Nelson Mandela, that sum up so very effectively the message for each member of IndianOil team on this historic day…

"I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended."

And the journey continues with a new resolve…

During these 50 years in the service of the nation, IndianOil has expanded its horizon, reached new peaks, and achieved historic milestones with one single-minded purpose to participate in India’s economic development and to meet customer aspirations.

Today in every nook & corner of the country, in every terrain from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Kutch to Kohima, You can spot IndianOil’s Orange and Blue signage spelling dependability, trust and confidence to millions of customers.

With a committed team, IndianOil has been catering to the common man’s aspirations, fuelling the army man’s courage and powering the nation from end to end. IndianOil celebrates its unending endeavor of being the Energy of India.

IndianOil is indeed the energy of India!
