IndianOil’s first wind power project inaugurated

IndianOil, India's flagship energy major and the country's largest commercial enterprise, has forayed into the wind power sector with the inauguration of its first 21 MW windmill farm in the Kutch district of Gujarat by Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, IndianOil, today. Mr. Behuria said, “IndianOil as the leading energy supplier would not only have to play a pivotal role in the nation’s energy independence, climate change mitigation and sustainable energy solutions but also work for a sustainable energy business.”

The Project has been conceptualised and commissioned by Business Development Group and Pipelines Division of IndianOil. Mr. B. M. Bansal, Director (Planning & Business Development), said that IndianOil is committed towards 'inclusive growth’ and is making steady investments in innovative technologies and solutions for sustainable energy flow and economic growth. As part of this effort, IndianOil has set up a renewable energy group which looks into the new energy initiatives like wind and solar power.
IndianOil has invested Rs. 130 crores in setting up the windmill farm to generate 21 MW of power being utilised to support its fuel storage & oil pipelines in Gujarat. Mr. P. K. Chakraborti, Director (Pipelines) shared that the project consisting of 14 wind electric generators, will provide power to five pipeline locations of IndianOil in Gujarat that is Radhanpur, Mundra, Vadinar, Viramgam and Sidhpur.

Major achievements

The wind power project has also earned the distinction of being one of the quickest commissioned projects among large wind projects. The generation of power from the wind farm (since it was commissioned a few months back) has already crossed the figure of 100 lakh KW and generated revenue of over Rs. 4 crores. The power generated from the wind farm will lead to huge saving for the Corporation. The project has been implemented through Suzlon Energy Ltd., a pioneer in end-to-end wind power solutions.

The power plant has not just added on to the revenue of IndianOil, but the energy generation from the project is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions to the extent of 34,700 metric tonnes per annum! This would help the Corporation in reducing its carbon footprints and supplement its continuous efforts towards environment preservation. The learning and experience from this pioneering project will help IndianOil expand its wind energy portfolio to other geographical areas of India making it truly a ‘green’ company.

Towards sustainability

At IndianOil, sustainable development means helping meet the growing energy needs of the nation in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways. IndianOil believes in running its operations responsibly today to build a dependable and sustainable energy system for tomorrow. IndianOil is also a pioneer in developing techno-economically viable and environment-friendly products and services for the benefit of its consumers.

The Corporation, being a major energy company with a strong focus on sustainable energy, has been exploring and diversifying into alternative energy sources which can be tapped and marketed on a commercial scale. Gas, bio-fuels and Hydrogen fuel are also now part of the energy portfolio of IndianOil.
