IOCL, ONGC set up semifinal clash
Ahmedabad   06-Jan-2011

IOCL and ONGC posted identical 2-0 wins on Wednesday in their Petroleum Sports Promotion Board inter-unit hockey tournament matches at the KSHA and set up a mouth-watering semfinal clash on Thursday.

In the second semifinal, BPCL take on GAIL with an eye on Friday's final encounter.

Earlier, ONGC needed just two minutes to get into the lead against CPCL as Mandeep Antil sliced through the defence to slot home. With a 1-0 lead, ONGC began to control passing and possession.

Their discipline was rewarded in the 17th minute when they doubled their lead through another field goal thanks to Gurvinder Singh Chandi. With the two-goal cushion, ONGC went into cruise control as they frustrated their opponents who found no way to answer back.

In the day's second match, a shortened encounter, VR Raghunath put IOCL ahead in the second minute as EIL failed to get into rhythm early. The early mistake meant IOCL played far more freely and predictably doubled their lead through Raghunath again, this time in the 12th minute. IOCL then held on to their lead to seal the deal.
