Public sector oil companies dominated the placements from the NTT Calicut this year with fat pay packages as the IT majors preferred to stay away. With as many as 90 companies visiting the campus for recruitment the students were found to opt more for core engineering jobs. For a change, ONGC, visiting the campus for the first time, offered the highest pay package of Rs 10 lakh. In fact, 25 students (21 from mechanical and four from electrical engineering) were recruited on Rs 10 lakh annual salary, According to Dr TK Suresh Babu, head. Department of Training and Placement, this is the first time in the history of NIT placements that the highest salary has reached Rs 10 lakh. The previous best was Rs 9 lakh. Apart from ONGC, which recruited 25, other first-timers to the cam-pus included IOC, HPCL, BP, Deloitte Consulting, Schlumbcrger and McAfee. Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Bank of America also visited the campus to recruit engineers. Conspicuous by their absence were TCS, Infosys, Cognizant etc, However, Microsoft and Yahoo were active in the recruitment process, Dr Suresh Babu said 38 students got jobs with salary ranging from Rs 9 to l0 lakh, eight with salary from Rs 7 to 9 lakh and 42 with remuneration between Rs 6 to 7 lakh. For the first time, MCA students also got cent percent placements. The M.Tech students got 80% placement. About 50% of the undergraduate students and 10% of postgraduates got more than one job offer. Around 140 companies had expressed interest in participating in the campus recruitment process. But only 90 were given permission. The institute has come to a position where it cannot give date to any company offering a salary of less than Rs 5 lakh, Dr Suresh Babu said.
