Silver jubilee of Assam Oil School of Nursing

Established in June, 1986 as an ancillary institution of the 84 year old prestigious Assam Oil Hospital by the Assam Oil Division of IOC Ltd at Digboi with recognition from the Indian Nursing Council for offering a three and a half year long diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), the Assam Oil School of Nursing completed 25 years of its quality services to the community this month. With having produced 298 qualified nurses now serving in premier health institutions within the country including the IOCL hospitals, Apollo Hospital in Chennai, Peerless General Hospital in Kolkata, GNRC in Guwahati besides two of them being in health service in Australia, the Assam Oil School of Nothing celebrated the silver jubilee programme with a variety of activities spread over four days recently. The programme was steered by an organising committee with Dr A Dutta Kardom and Dr PC Goswami as organizing chairpersons and Dr BK Das as organizing secretary.

The activities included holding of various outdoor sports competitions like 100 metre race shot put, javelin and discus throws and Go As You Like and indoor genies like badminton, carom and arm wrestling among the students. Various literary competitions such as poetry recitation, extempore speech, debates and quiz competitions were held in the school auditorium with the participation of teams form the Nursing School of OIL Hospital at Duliajan and the Nursing School of Assam Medical College at Dibrugarh. An eye catching exhibition of various crafts, models, posters, drawings and paintings was also put up by the students of the school for public viewing in the Golden Jubilee Auditorium of the AOD.

A series of scientific talks were also organised on the occasion. The chief resource person was Dr Mridula Saikia Khanikar, principal of the Regional College of Nursing in Guwahati. Banashree Lata Sadhanidar, lecturer of the same college was the guest speaker. Dr SK Chakravorty, Medical Director of Ramakrishna Mission, inaugurated the scientific session.

The concluding function of the silver jubilee celebration, held in the auditorium of the Golden Jubilee Complex was initiated by Atul Chandra Sarmah. The meeting was presided over by Dr PK Saikia, DGM-Medical of AOD. Ambaris Panda, Executive Director of IOCL, AOD was the chief guest. SP Bordoloi, GM I/C of IOCL, AOD and Dr Mridula Saikia Khanikar attended the meeting as guests of honour. The meeting started with an invocation followed by the school chorus rendered by the students of the school. To mark the occasion, a souvenir named Rupalim, edited by Dr AJ Sarma, was also released. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various sports and literary competitions by the chief guest and the other dignitaries on the dais. The vote of thanks was offered by the organising secretary Dr BK Das.

The meeting was followed by a cultural programme performed by the students of the Assam Oil School of Nursing.
