<b>Refinery organises sports meet at adopted village</b> Carrying its rural community service forward during IndianOil's golden jubilee celebrations, Guwahati Refinery organized a four-day rural sports meet at Gumoria Pathar village on August 8, 2009. Mr. Jayanta Kumar Das, a former Assam State football player and retired officer of Guwahati Refinery, inaugurated the event at this village, around 30 km from Guwahati. The village was adopted by Guwahati Refinery in the early 1990s. The inaugural function saw a good turnout of school students, teachers and other people from the village and the chief guest and officials from Guwahati Refinery were accorded a warm traditional welcome amidst the beating of drums and traditional folk dances, a press release said. The students of ten schools of that area participated in a march-past parade. Mr. A. C. Shekhar, Senior Manager (HR), Guwahati Refinery spoke on the objective of having the rural sports meet and gave an account of the refinery's community service initiatives. Mr. Jayanta Kumar Das, the chief guest, in his address, appreciated the efforts of all concerned that had gone into the organizing of such an event for children of rural areas. Mr. Das stressed on the importance of sports in the lives of young children for improving physical fitness, mental well-being, developing the spirit of sportsmanship and promoting camaraderie. He then inaugurated the sports meet and kicked off an exhibition football match played between ‘Mitani Rewa Maheswar’ School and ‘Nartap’ School. A total of 18 events were played during this four-day sports meet, including an event for the ladies of the villages. Around 500 people participated on the inaugural day of the sports meet. As part of the golden jubilee celebrations, the North East Integrated State Office of Indian Oil also organized an invitational golf tournament at Rhino Environment Park Training Area, Narengi on August 9. Around 40 Golfers took part in the tournament from the Army, Railways, IndianOil (NEISO & AOD) and retired IndianOil Officials. Mr. Shankar Barua, DGP Assam was the chief guest of the concluding function. Among others, Major General K. S. Sethi, GOC, HQ 101 Area took part in the tournament and appreciated the efforts of IndianOil for meeting the energy requirement of the country.
