Ahmedabad   26-Jun-2010

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued a notice to the IndianOil (IOCL) in connection with the fire that erupted in the backyard of Gujarat Refinery (GR) four days ago. GPCB officials said that IOCL authorities have been asked to clean up and restore the area where fire broke out.

"The GPCB head office in Gandhinagar has directed IOCL to initiate remedial action and clean up the mess within 15 days. Also, IOCL has been asked to present an action plan to ensure that such incidents don't happen in future," said GR Tamboli, regional director, GPCB. "If IOCL doesn't respond within 15 days, we will take action under the Environmental Protection Act," Tamboli added. The Railways may also get directions from GPCB to stop the flow of oil products from their yard into the dump yard of Gujarat Refinery in Karachiya village. A major fire had broken out in the crude oil products that were being dumped in the backyard of the refinery on Tuesday. A magisterial inquiry is on in the incident even as IOCL too has formed an internal committee to probe the matter.
