New Delhi 13-Feb-2008
IndianOil will invest Rs 3,500 crore to lay 2,080 km of crude oil and petroleum product pipeline by 2011-12, K.K. Jha, executive director - projects, said today. Of the 2,080-km pipeline, 730 km will be for crude oil and the balance 1350 km for moving petroleum products. Jha was speaking on the sidelines of a steel seminar here organised by Metal Junction and Metal Bulletin. IndianOil already has ongoing pipeline projects covering 1,573 km, including 370 km for crude oil and the balance for petroleum products, being set up at a cost of Rs 2,271 crore, Jha said. In India, pipelines constitute 31-34 per cent of the total transportation pie for petroleum products while rail and road along with coastal modes, account for 30-33 percent and 33-39 per cent, respectively, he said. In US, pipelines and coastal mode account for 66 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively, in the transport of petroleum products while the balance is accounted for by road and rail. LPG pipeline IndianOil is also laying a pipeline to transport liquefied petroleum gas from Panipat to Jalandhar and has plans for many more such pipelines, Jha said. Until recently, LPG was transported mainly through rail and road to most of the bottling plants. Transportation by pipeline is one-third the cost of movement by rail, Jha said. IndianOil shares ended at Rs 462.75 on National Stock Exchange today, down 3.7 per cent from Monday.
