State to help IndianOil find sites for LPG filling centres
Kolkata   12-Apr-2012

The state transport department will help the IndianOil find suitable locations for setting up auto LPG filling centres in the city.

State transport minister Madan Mitra today held a meeting with the officials at Writers’ Buildings.

Mr Mitra said that a committee would be formed with the officials and government representatives to identify the areas in which gas filling centres can be set up after which the committee would earmark the plots. The committee would submit its report within 10 days.

The government plans to set up three to four gas filling centres. At present, there are around 40 centres in and around Kolkata.

Later, executive director of IndianOil Indrajit Bose said, compared to a petrol pump, an auto LPG filling centre requires a larger plot of land.

“We require around 50 to 60 metres of land so that both auto LPG filling pumps and petrol/diesel pumps can be set up in the same outlet,” Mr Bose said. In case, there is a government depot in the selected area then the centre would be set up there.

Despite complaints of dearth of gas filling centres in the city, Mr Bose said seven to eight centres out of the existing 40 centres run in losses. “We do not want to incur losses in running the centres,” he added.
