Amidst enthusiastic applause from the audience, a team of R&D scientists climbed the stage briskly to be felicitated for their invention by none other than Chairman, IndianOil.

A team of scientists led by Mr. Birjesh Kumar, GM (Refining Technology) and comprising Mr. S. Saravanan, Mr. P. Varshney, Ms. Reshmi Manna, Mr. K. B. Srinivas, Dr. (Ms). Anju Chopra, and Mr. L. L. Saroya received the Achiever of the Year Award (team category) from Mr. B. Ashok, Chairman on the occasion of the 44thFoundation Day celebrations of IndianOil R&D.

The award recognised the development & commercialization of OCTAMAX technology. It is a unique process for production of high octane gasoline blending stock from C4 olefins (pre-dominantly iso-butene) ex-FCC. Slogging painstakingly in the laboratories, this energetic team developed the first Basic Design & Engineering Package (BDEP) in-house without any assistance that has high potential for commercialization.

In the first phase, the product will be marketed in the major metal cutting Indian markets of Mandi Gobind Garh (Punjab) and Alang (Gujarat) from IndianOil’s LPG bottling plants at Nabha and Bhavnagar. The product will be made available on a pan-India basis thereafter.

In addition to the team award, Ms. Nitu Singh, Sr. Analyst, Analytical Department, was also felicitated by the Chairman. Ms. Singh won the WIPS National Award also for outstanding Woman employee of the year at the recently held 25th  annual WIPS Convention.

The award salutes the grit and determination of Ms. Singh and recognises her performance in the face of debilitating physical challenges. In his address to the IOCians on the occasion of the 44th  Foundation Day of IndianOil R&D, Chairman said, “I congratulate all the R&D Centre scientists – past and present - and thank you for the wonderful work that has left an impact on the growth of the organisation.”

Focusing on the need to scale up commercialization of indigenous technologies, he said, “Innovations don’t last long. They get obsolete or can be copied. So speed (in development)  is the key. I have confidence in the abilities of R&D scientists, and I assure you that the technologies developed here shall be deployed with full faith within the company. We will demonstrate their efficacy here and then command our price form the world,” he added.

The Achiever of the Year awards have been instituted at IndianOil R&D to encourage the scientific personnel to undertake path-breaking research and enhance employee engagement. The Award recognises such teams and individuals who make significant contribution.
