IndianOil to recruit engineers based on GATE scores
New Delhi   24-Nov-2009
IndianOil plans to recruit fresh engineering graduates based on their GATE score instead of depending on a written test conducted by it. The PSU oil sector major, will shortlist candidates for interviews based on their GATE score beginning 2010, according to a company official. IndianOil recruits anywhere between 500-1,000 fresh engineering graduates a year. This will replace the existing PSU ‘open recruitment’ process of conducting written admission tests of approximately 70,000 candidates for short listing. The tests were conducted through outsourced agencies. “Our recruitment process was never marred by any controversy. However, we were trying to devise a more credible selection procedure. In GATE we find a body competent to gauge a student’s abilities in our areas of interest,” Mr. V. C. Agarwal, Director HR, IndianOil, told Business Line. The company received the Union HRD Ministry approval for such a tie-up about two months ago. “We will recruit approximately 200 candidates through this process in 2010,” Mr. Agarwal said. Unlike the conventional method where applicants need to shell out any application fee (Rs 100 for SC/ST category and Rs. 300 for general category) to appear in the written tests, the IOC recruitment process will henceforth be free of cost except the fee (Rs. 900) payable for appearing for GATE. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology primarily for selecting candidates for scholarships for post-graduate studies. This apart, GATE scores are mandatory in many institutes.
