Jaipur   05-Jul-2010

Several hundred litres of crude oil was spread in half a kilometer area in Swaroopganj when Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) pipeline got damaged allegedly due to a pilferage bid in Bujela village under Rohida police station of Sirohi on Sunday. A team of IOC staff, which reached the spot, was trying to accumulate the spilled crude oil and transfer it to nearest station.

A team of experts from IOC said in view of safety of people living in the area, it was not advisable to repair the fault. However, the supply has been stopped but due to heavy rain in the area, the accumulation was getting difficult.

According to reports, locals informed the district administration and the IOC about leakage of crude oil and expressed fear of accident. Soon after the news, a team of administrative and police officials reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

Regional manager, IOCL, Sanjay Jain, said the leakage probably occurred due to pilferage attempt by unidentified persons as there have been such attempts in the past too. "We are not able to reach the site due to heavy rain in the area. However, the supply has been stopped to prevent wastage," he added.

He said spilled crude oil has been accumulated in the pits, created for the purpose, and efforts are on to transport the product to the nearest station. "For the safety of people, the repair process will not be started till rain stops," he said. On the issue of total loss due to spilled crude oil, he said that spilled oil has been accumulated. Therefore loss was not much but exact value cannot be ascertained.

Sources said that pilferage incidents were common in the area, but the authorities were unable to check the menace. Apart from loss, such incidents might lead to tragic incident if not taken seriously, said a local resident.

SP (Sirohi) Hinglaz Dan told TOI the IOC pipeline from Gujarat to Mathura passed through Pali and Sirohi.

Around noon, a few local people spotted leakage from the pipeline and informed the police and the IOC. "Though exact reason was not known but the pipeline got damaged due to landslide," he said and added that it had occurred due to heavy rainfall for the past two days.la village under Rohida police station of Sirohi on Sunday.
