Common LPG kitchen facility at Adabari
Guwahati   22-Aug-2010

A common LPG kitchen was inaugurated at Ananda Nagar in the Adabari area of the city by AC Sarma, Deputy General Manager (LPG), IndianOil. The facility will benefit around 100 families of the area living below the poverty line, a press release said.

The common LPG kitchen scheme is one of the components of the Vision-2015 drawn up by the Union Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to make LPG more easily accessible to disadvantaged people, especially those living in under-served areas so that the standard of living improves and the women folk can reap the benefits of using LPG in place of kerosene and firewood. Replacing firewood by LPG would also result in environment protection as it would result in reduction of cutting down of trees in forest areas.

The common LPG kitchen scheme is being implemented by IndianOil under its corporate social responsibility programme. Under the scheme IndianOil provides a connection with four cylinders and five single burners to a community at no cost. The community members appoint a caretaker who takes care of the kitchen facility and charges the users as and when they use the facility. The cost of buying subsequent refill cylinders is thus collected from the users by the caretakers. The scheme is expected to benefit daily wage earners and other who cannot afford to collect enough money to buy a whole refill cylinder, but would be able to pay per usage of the common kitchen facility. The cost of using the facility is expected to be very reasonable and would cost the users must less than other fuel, besides providing all the benefits of LPG. Indian Oil has a target of installing 150 such common kitchens in the North East by March 2011.
